I am alive. I'm sick at the moment, and haven't read my flist for about two weeks, and I'm writing this at half-past one, but I was itching to get the damn thing out of the way. Why have half my posts lately been "I haven't updated in a while" posts? Oh, yes, that's why: I suck. From now on I should just add a link to this on my returns, because it feels odd to not say something about having skived off.
I'll try to catch up on LJ as soon as I can. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow morning: you think you're doing okay when you go to sleep, maybe you're shaking it off, but bam - gnomes crawl out from under your bed and fill your throat with gunk. But on the bright side (as I told my friend in an email at four yesterday morning when I was kept awake by the raspy pain) my sense of taste is much better than it usually is when I'm unwell, meaning I haven't had a lot of trouble eating and drinking; and the only times I've even remotely felt like throwing up have been during a couple of intense coughing fits. I still feel gross, but it's not too bad. *faints dramatically*

I can't be on you right now. My rage is threatening to overwhelm me, and I need a good hard distraction from the direction of Real Life.
Before I go, two things:
1. Turning on that fugly navigation strip without a direct link to the page that turns it off? NOT COOL.
2. If a fictional someone is drunk or put under some kind of love spell it might be a good idea to not hold them accountable for their own actions. YES, YOU ARE HAVING NON-CONSENSUAL SEX WITH THEM. THEY WOULDN'T DO YOU IF THEY WERE SOBER. I'm not trying to stick a moral judgment on anyone. NC sex is a plot element just like murder or drug use, and if it's done well I have no problem with it. But in this (RPG) situation nobody is acknowledging that these people are under the influence, and I'm pretty sure the players' thoughts are somewhere along the lines of "Oh, well, those ones were going out anyway, and that guy had a secret crush and probably wouldn't have minded sleeping with him - he's just following his innermost desires!" Any accompanying issues are ignored. I just ... why are these characters acting like it's consensual? It doesn't make sense, and it is turning them wildly OOC (even if the RPG is pretty cracky as it is). >:|

I'm a terrible person. Yes, I admit it. I haven't been posting, haven't been commenting, haven't done a lot of things of value that I've honestly been meaning to. claireoujisama, I never got back to you with feedback for your story and I feel really bad about that. But hell, you've got more of a chance than anyone I know if winning the damn thing, and you definitely don't need my help with that.
Extreme procrastination aside, my brother turned up on our doorstep last night for a surprise visit, I just this minute finished reading Making History and am filled with joyous, unfettered love for Stephen Fry and the world at large, the sun is out, I will hopefully be making lasagna for tea, and the 'Coming Soon!' ads for the new series of Doctor Who have started up on Prime iffiness about David Tennant's usurpation of my One True Doctor's role aside.
Life, for the moment, is very pleasant.

Oh yeah: TK and Mackie are having a romantic weekend away together. At a secluded bach. Away from all potential distractions. Lol! Mackie is still being a jerk, though. Will this affect the hot sex? With his bashed-up face I'd have to say yes.
ETA: OMG, I forgot about Mackie and Sarah! Eww, they both like the same woman. But when TK gives in to his fabricated sudden simmering attraction it'll be like sleeping with Mackie by default. Hmm. :/

Badly-written sex scenes are so boring. Except for possibly when the characters are made to sound a little like zombies. "MORE!!!" "YES!!!" "BRAINS!!!" I could almost swear I'd seen this exact fic ten thousand times before, but that's only because apparently good sex can only ever be written one way, with one set of euphemisms and imagery and crappy, crappy dialogue.
Eh, I'm not really complaining, I'm just skimming it to see what I'm missing before moving on to better stuff. The great thing about fic-by-numbers is that you only need to read every twentieth sentence to understand what's going on, and only about three sentences total to pick which Standard Problem is going to affect the couple and which Charming Ending is going to be tacked on. Thanks for saving me time, I really appreciate it!
Forgive my capslock mood, I just got very caught up in the moment. Oh, baby! That invading member is such a turn-on! o_O

Mackie and TK are so doing it. Or will do it. Or did it back in med school. You can't watch them together and not think it. All that innuendo can't be good for Mackie's already shattered self-control. The excessive touching? The loving concern? The constant reassurances? Their UST tonight was above and beyond anything I've seen from two people not already snogging. Let it be known: I still loathe Mackie; tonight he admirably displayed both his snobby conceit and his capacity to be a complete whiny baby. But when their faces are centimetres apart I can make myself forget for a while. ;)
The parallels between this year and last year are pretty funny - around this same time we were seeing Hugo bashed (he took it so much better, even if it was indirectly self-inflicted) and Mark hovering by his bedside. It's times like this that I really miss those old storylines, especially with how terribly the stragglers have been doing. How is poor Mark left stuck between the player blonde who shouldn't be able to attract pins with a magnet and an annoying brunette who was never meant to be more than a distraction? And what the hell is wrong with Sarah? Oh, that's right, her taste in men has taken a turn for the sickening. Although I was surprised it didn't take six months for her to figure out what a sleaze Mackie was. One thumb up, Shorty. All you need now is for Andrew to walk in the door blaming a recurring brain injury for his baffling decision to run off with the biggest psycho on the planet. Hey, his sister is now a perfect human being and the snotty stepchild is out of the picture! And as far as I'm concerned Baldy can get eaten by Canadian wildlife.
The clock imagery? Greatly amusing. My sister has that black clock in her room. The split-screen was funnier, but only because of the whole fat cow thing. Hey, that reminds me, where's Li Mei been lately? She has her moments ... sometimes. Eh, I don't really care. Just keep the simmering invisible attraction going between the best-friends-from-way-back, it's what I'm there for!

This is driving me mad! I know I've read that name somewhere before, I just can't remember where. All I get from Google and Wikipedia are historical figures and poems I've never heard of. I'm going to go with a casual reference in Harry Potter and hope the Lexicon can help.
Yes! I wasn't just imagining things. He was on a trading card. Success!

I thought it would be fine to go fetch the mail in a pair of jandals. Boy, was I wrong! They started squelching halfway down the drive, chilling my feet and soaking my cuffs. Yes, it's rained a flood the past couple of days, but I am young and naive. Plus my hood kept blowing off in the wind and I had to keep yanking my pant legs up with one hand along the way to keep them out of puddles.
The only consolation is that there was a new Ezibuy catalogue waiting for me. *grabs highlighter and snuggles into the blankets*
This morning claireoujisama inadvertently reminded me of a book I read about a while ago, and I had to go Google it. The short story that turned into The Brief History of the Dead is here. Go. Read. I love the little details and evocative imagery and the confident wafting quality and just. Fantastic. If you read one pimp of mine today, make it this.

This is my Dancing with the Stars squee post. :D:D:D:D:D I really got into the first series - I even watched that Holmes special because I thought Shane and Nerida made the cutest couple ever. There were some reservations about the second living up to expectations, but last night was much more enjoyable than I'd anticipated. It's one of those great guilty-pleasure, pure entertainment shows - the chocolate of television, if you will. And I love how everyone is talking about it; you don't see that kind of phenomenon often enough.
I hope once everyone gets over the pressure of last season things will run a bit more smoothly. Even Jason was showing some nerves last night, although, I have to admit, he's a much better singer than he gets credit for. On Good Morning they've been talking to Brendan Cole and Candy Lane, and she is a fabulous speaker. Her role puts her in a bit of an awkward position, but this morning we've seen what she can do when she's not having to throw to people or follow the script. Bring on more ad libbing!
They kept the three best judges, and there's potential in Carol-Ann. Last season they gave higher marks in the first show than in the following weeks, so I'm not going to say she was being too easy and 'guest-judgey' until I've seen her settle into the role. There will be some adjustment next week according to how the other judges marked, and with this calibre of dancers there's going to have to be some harsher criticism. Dancing is serious business!
The costumes, the costumes! I'm a secret sucker for extravagant stuff like that, and they didn't disappoint. So much shiny, so many sequins, such lovely colours and fabrics. Whenever the women dip in the slow dances I wonder how they can avoid standing on their own hems, but if the guys can keep clear I guess they'll just have to manage too. And the shoes! I have so much respect for anyone who can move confidently in those things. Unfortunately, the shoes mean I'll never be able to dance properly. We were all trying on my sister's ball shoes the other day, and I said to her I'd have an easier time walking on stilts. (Seriously. We've got some old ones lying around, and it's like getting back on a bike with them.) Couldn't even stand up. For my own ball I had much smaller heels, and even then I was wobbling around. I had to grab Elna's arm tight on the way to the buses (a downwards-sloping concrete road, no less! What were they thinking?) and took them off within about fifteen minutes of getting to the venue in order to bop barefoot with my friends. It's very sad that you can't get elegant flat shoes for clumsy oafs. The only ones I don't think are ugly are actual ballet shoes, but the ones they sell in shops - no. Nowhere near the same impact.
I've got no idea who will win, but there's the same vibe around Beatrice Faumuina as there was with Norman Hewitt. I think my grandmother knows her from athletics, and she only has good things to say. She did give an incredible performance, and that dress looked wonderful on her. The crop of celebrities is better live than on paper, but I have to process-of-elimination select Steve Gurney as my pick for leaving, just because I like everyone else more. We've seen a lot of David Wikaira-Paul lately, but unfortunately it looks like he'll be staying.
In other news, I just choked on my laughter reading capslock_stugh. Now I am flailing with love for Fry and Laurie and want to go straight out and find a copy of The Liar. *sigh* And I wonder if Emirates' eighteen years worth of profits are due to their ads being shown every two minutes on BBC World. Damn that catchy theme music.

I'm copying some of the text messages I want to keep from my phone to the computer, and my friends' text lingo is driving me INSANE. My fingers automatically go to spell certain words correctly, and then I falter, make mistakes, check, delete, fumble, make more mistakes, and the whole process takes three times as long as it should. I don't care if they write like that - I can decipher it - and I don't want them to think they have to spell perfectly when they message me, but I cannot stand having to write it out myself. I'm a disgrace to my generation!

Wah wah wah. If I could somehow stop the continual whinge-fest known as Home and Away being shown in this house and drilled into my brain, I would. It's painful to hear grown adults with the mental capacity of five year-olds making stupid decisions and getting bested by the most incompetent villains ever created. Every three months the same plot is recycled, sometimes with the same characters. While it'd be immensely satisfying to throw the remote at the television, there are Other People in this room who should know better, but don't.
Where are the Hugo-villains when you need them? If he were there, and knew that the idiot blonde was using her status as an excuse to get money, he would totally kill the old guy. She gets her arse kicked, and he has the fantastic moral ambiguity that keeps you wondering whether he did a good thing after all. Everybody wins!
This is bringing back happy memories of last year; I feel like going and rewatching the clifftop and exam room scenes now. If there's a better form of education than boarding school, I haven't heard of it. Here's a question: what would have happened if Hugo had told Mark about his feelings way back then? I think Mark would have been stuck in the situation and forced to deal with it in one way or another - from what we've heard, his family wasn't the wealthiest, and any boarding school the Carmonts approved of wouldn't be cheap. He'd already shown what he thought of some of the other guys there, and I hope he wouldn't join them just because he felt uncomfortable around his best friend. Swift New-Age acceptance and an attempt to find him a more suitable boyfriend? Total alienation? Months of awkwardness followed by dorm room nookie? If only we knew. :(
ETA. OMG, someone turned off the life support. Hugo, that you?
